21/10: Evil Russians are Coming to UK?

Today's article in The Guardian "Tories deny discussing donation with Russian billionaire" is another example of blatant attempts from the media to portray Russians as some kind of evil beasts waiting to penetrate the Western world. Look at this picture they used:

Deripaska and tories
(via The Guardian)

Doesn't Deripaska look like some stupid mafia dumb-ass on this picture? Perhaps you will be interested to know that this man was a math whiz in school, has a degree in physics from the best university in Russia, and managed to build an industrial empire from nothing in less than 10 years.

But of course, The Guardian doesn't want Tories to enter the cabinet, so why not play the Russian Card? Anyway, who cares? Everybody knows that Russians are going to take over and switch off your gas, we will send our mafia men to take over your businesses, and buy all your real-estate in London. And the evil Deripaska, authoritarian Putin, and this weirdo Abramovich will be the frontmen of the new battle.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not pro-Putin and I don't care about Deripaska. It's just a bit funny to see how Western media is frantically trying to create a certain image for Russians in such a blatant way. You could see it last year when the oil scandal happened in Ukraine, you could see it during the Georgian conflict, and it's still going on now. One good thing is that when they actually allow comments to their articles, readers can see through the crap and demand a more objective picture. Maybe it's time?

LOL

You should post the article of the lady who helped amass such wealth. From a simple secretary, she has built such great wealth and oppose the image of pretty Russian trophy wife. She absolute amazed every businessman she has met

Interesting how only the oligarchs who have been politically friendly to Putin are regarded as the cool guys these days.

Ivana,

You're not right. I think if you make a poll more people in Russia will actually say they like Khodorkovsky better than Deripaska.

Don't you think they do this to their own citizens too? Give the article author the benefit of the doubt – try to steer clear of paranoia.

Your comments about the portrayal of Russia in western media are valid - reports are often biased. But your comments about the choice of photos are not necessarily valid. Look at any Russian's holiday photos - are the people smiling? Do you smile in photos? In my experience, I have not found many Russians to be "smiley" in photos. Okay, the middle one is not flattering, but the other two are pretty typical.

And what about the way the way the West is portrayed in Russian media? Russian media does exactly the same types of things to western leaders and in their coverage of the West in general.

Agree with you on coverage of events in the West, such as the Georgia conflict. Western media left out important background info. But do you really consider the Russian media's coverage to be complete, fair & balanced?

Jack, the person in middle of that picture (the one which isn't flattering) is Deripaska. The other two are British.

No, no one considers the Russian media to be fair and balanced and I doubt there are many people who claim it is. The western media, however, should be held to higher standards.

Jack, do you really think that Russians look like that on photos most of the time?

As for the Russian media, I didn't say that their coverage is complete and balanced.

Hi everyone. Time is that quality of nature which keeps events from happening all at once. Lately it doesn't seem to be working.
I am from Namibia and also am speaking English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: " Acres and potentials, dist.I was probably certain to changes jurisdictions but of process, there's farmers of us.If provided, meet in the homestead homestead of the land for which you are trying a hospital description."
