21/06: Russian Fashion
Russian fashion
How much do you know about Russian Fashion?
Perhaps you envision fur
coats and hunting boots with a speck of Italian brand names here and
there?

In fact Russian fashion has taken it's place on the home turf, and is now confidently ascending the international markets. This April Defile and Neve, the Russian analog of the famous Fashion Week took place in Saint Petersburg. Eminent Saint Petersburg designers, promising younger ones and brand new beginners had participated, bringing together more than 30 shows in 6 days.
Alena Ahmadulia, Denis Simachev, Igor Chapurin are already recognized in Europe. Many more are developing now in Moscow and Saint Petersburg to join the ranks of internationally know Russian designers.
13-th week of a fashion carried the slogan: « Time remembers the
first, leaving in histories of the best! ».

Of course the scale of St. Petersburg Defile could not yet rival that of the world famous Fashion Week. Still, the shows are very well organized.
Certainly, not everything works out perfectly. Unfortunately, the Week is very dependent on sponsorships, which are difficult to come by. The project came in existence mostly through the efforts of it's creator, Irina Ashkinadze. 7 years ago she did the unthinkable – opened a Russian fashion boutique at the time when Russia was swamped with Italian fashion and famous brand names. The boutique opened, Irina decided to start a professional fashion week in St. Petersburg.
The first steps were difficult, and very few could foresee the project's potential profitability. At first the shows ran on pure enthusiasm, will power, and the owners savings. All the early hurdles
only made the project's subsequent ascendancy to the Russian and International level all the more pleasant.

Traditionally Defile na Neve includes three categories of designers:
Established Designers, New Talented Developing Designers, and
Beginners. Works from all three categories is enjoyed by the public
equally. The shows are structured and scheduled so that beginners
receive time between the more established designer's shows. This way
the media is more likely to notice a deserving young designer, one who
would otherwise find it difficult to attract the journalists'
attention without resolving to épater. Unfortunately, it comes to no
surprise that the most media attention is given to the well known
luxury brand names, which also, incidentally, purchase the most
advertising in the press. Such skewered attention space and the fact
that investing in fashion is still considered a unprofitable hobby in
our country makes is even more difficult for the young designers to
develop and grow. One sign that change could be on the way is Mr.
Abramovich's recent decision to invest in Denis Simachev. Hopefully
other will follow suit and take another look at the Russian fashion.
Following is a selection of videos recorded during the latest Defile na Neve.
