30/06: St Petersburg yards walks.
">
There are plenty of unique areas to walk around in St. Petersburg, and
they are not all architectural landmarks.
Alexandrovski Sad on Petrogradskaya Storona is one spot very popular with the locals. It begins at the Artilleriyskaya Embarkment and follows it's lines along the Petropalvloskaya Fortress, passes Gorkovskaya Metro station, and stretches out to Baltiski Dom and Music Hall theatres, The
Planetarium, the Zoo and casino. This area always lively, on weekends especially so. A tram line outlines the park along one of the area's quieter streets. It's a great place for a long walk on a warm summer day. The park's expanse and it's natural beauty allow one to escape
the city for quite a while. Vasilevski Ostrov and the view of the Winter Palace await in the end of the walk.

Malaya Sadovaya street is the pedestrian oasis in the city center. It's very popular with the youth and the underground movements. Street performances take place frequently, The styles vary from Punk, to Rock, Jazz, Blues, and Break-Dance, to Tango. When passing by the statue of Mashka The Cat follow the locals' lead and toss a coin at it. With plenty of benches and antique lampposts, this little street is pleasant both at night and during the day. It leads to Manezhnaya Ploschad, home Mihailovski Manez, Winter Stadium, and Dom Kino. There is a miniature park and a fountain in the center of the square.
Other, less conventional walk routs lie through the city yards. Well hidden behind the buildings' imperial facades, many of the yards are quite picturesque. You could start on the busiest streets, and let the yards lead you away slowly into the city's oasis of quiet. You could loose your way there, and walk without purpose, or take a romantic walk or bring some friends along for long uninterrupted conversation. There area a couple of yards worth noting off of Nevski Prospekt. One
begins across from Marat Street and leads to Mayakovskogo Street. Another begins in the archway of Mayakovskogo #10, and has four outlets to Nevski Prospekt. Very picturesque and cozy little yards.
There is another good one from Mayakovskaya #18 to Chekhovskaya #3,
