Way To Russia Ahead of Competition

Refunding Russian Train Tickets

If you buy your train tickets through a travel agency or online, it will now be harder to get them refunded in case you decide to cancel or make any changes to your plans.

According to the new directive #787А issued by The Russian Railways on 29.10.2007 (which came into effect on the 1st December 2007), a passenger can only get a refund for their train tickets

1) in person, and
2) after a valid ID is presented.

In other words the agency where you bought your tickets cannot return them and get a refund -- now the passengers themselves have to do that.
In order to go ahead with a refund you will have to go to one of Moscow train stations, bring the tickets and your passport (with a valid visa), sign a special paper, and get a refund.

The good news is that refund regulations still stayed the same, and they are quite liberal comparing to the ones in European countries or the US. According to the Article 92, if you return your ticket 15 or more hours before the departure you're entitled to the full refund. More information about refund regulations can be found here: Russia Train Regulations.

If you would like to be the first to receive updates like this, you can subscribe by sending "WTR subscribe" to this number: +44 762 480 25 52 -- this service is free (your operator's standard fees apply only).
