Moscow Base Jumping

Here are some Moscow base jump vids from Youtube. The video above is my favorite. These guys just walk into the library of the Moscow Universtity on the 21st floor. The ones of you who know Moscow, know that this is one of the “7 Sisters”, the Stalin high rise buildings, built in the 50s. Where was I? Ah, they walk into the library, say a polite Hello to some woman who is there and then the first guy jumps out of the window. The second guy, who films, says a polite “Good Bye”, checks the wind and jumps as well. Its just great! I wonder how they got on and off the campus, since that is highly guarded and your bags are checked when you get in. You won’t make it in, if you are not a student anyway. Good one.
More and some story about a secret base jumper club right here ...

Being a former extreme snowboarder, I had good hook ups to other extreme sports people when I came to Moscow. Right after my arrival in 2003, I have been invited to one of Moscows most exclusive clubs. No, it wasn’t one of the posh hangouts for Oligarchs. I was taken to a government building in the Moscow center at night. When we arrived we met some people, who just left the club on the street infront of the club. Even in 2003, far before Tarrantinos Death Proof, these guys were driving US muscle cars from the 60s, all shiny and in best shape. We said hello, had a quick chat and then walked to the club.

On the way you have to pass a FSB guard, saying nothing, but checking you out with a grim face. Then you walk into some backyard of a government building. You pass a number of garages and one of the gate is actually the entrance to the club. There is no sign. You’l have to enter a code to get into the first door. Right after there is another heavy door with another box. Now it gets spooky. You need to scan your fingerprints and if you are a club member the door opens magically. You walk down some stairs into a very cool club with industrial design. The doors are made out of submarine or alike doors. The seats and tables are taken from some old planes. Some of them are eject seats from jets.

The walls of this club are covered with photos of base jumpers in frames. Base jumping is popular among Moscovites. While you’ll find a few of these extreme guys in cities like New York (and the world famous “The Range”), you have enough people to form a club here in Moscow. Most of these guys are rich kids, but the cool and nice types, not the Paris Hilton copying pretentious ones. Most of them are in their 30’s now. Their parents made their fortunes with the privatization in the 90s, while the kids enjoyed their time and partied. Techno and Drugs, the vast consume soon took its toll. Some of us died, says Olga, a long term member of this elite group. We tried anything, we wanted to have fun and we pushed the limits.

Parties and drugs soon proofed to be super visual and these guys looked for another thrill. Some of them burned out and became adults, becoming more quiet, creative and spiritual. Some others looked for nature and adrenaline. Some became snowboarders, others skydivers and base jumpers. Today we have a new generation of base jumpers. Younger people, who follow the footsteps of these guys, who led the way.

The club, I will not tell its name and location, is still alive and more popular than ever. You need to be invited to become a member. I find nothing special about it, apart of the interior and the nice atmosphere. Even though its closed for the public, they have regular concerts of famous groups and DJs playing there. Or you just go for some after work beer or some dinner. Meet some friends, play some pool, watch a movie and hang out.

Snow Chaos?

We just received the 2nd large dump of snow this winter season. What caused a lot of troubles in the rest of Europe is business as usual in Moscow and just slows things down (a lot)...

Europe received a lot of snow this week. what had caused a “snow chaos” in Germany is just business as usual for the Moscovite drivers. Of course things went kinda slow last night and this morning in rush hour, but even though the snow comes early this year, Moscovites are prepared and its not at all chaotic. Maybe they are not that bad drivers at all? (see next article below).

This is the second large snowfall, we receive this season. Its all a bit early, cutting out most of the wet cold snow/rain weather, which is usual for this season, but nobody is unhappy about it. For me, these first snowfalls, especially when it dumps a few centimeters like last night, remind me very much of my childhood in Bavaria. I love the snow and the first dump was always a pleasurable moment. For some reason it still puts a long lasting smile on my face :-) even though im am not in a small Bavarian village, but in a metropol.

I guess its because this snow just makes everything look better. Moscow looks much brighter, much cleaner and much more mysterious. Almost like in a farytale. Its just too bad, that the clean white very soon will turn into some black-brownish something and eventually become wet dirty slush.

Moscow Car Crashes

If you are a Moscovite you know that driving in Moscow is challenging, sometimes it can be dangerous....

I just found some Moscow car crash videos on Youtube. Most of them are from surveillance cameras. Moscow traffic is cracy in times and people drive totally respectless for the other. Have a look and be stunned about the bluntness of Moscow drivers.

BTW: If you are a Moscovite and got as acustomed to the driving here as I did, then be careful. The rules have recently changed and lawmakers increased the fines. Among many things you can now be fined for not wearing a seatbelt, using the cellphone while driving (yes, I know, sounds like an early 80’s law in Europe or the US) and not stopping at a crosswalk to let pedestrians pass. Speeding and going against a one way street or going on a walkway (all usual things here) will also be fined higher now.

So, will it help? I doubt it. The problem is a mix of the bad driving culture, respectless behaviour to the others and the fast growing amount of new (fast) cars. The cops will just put a bit more bribery money in their pockets and let the people go as usual? A Duma (parliament) member recently said in an interview that he doesn’t care who gets the money, the Russian government or the policemen, as long as it hurts the driver and he starts to behave better. Fines below $100 are probably o low for Moscovites, but what can you do. Its a federal law and this amount is a lot of money outside of Moscow, while here its just some pocket money for many of the Moscovites.

Have a look yourself. This is what I found on You Tube

That leaves me with wishing you luck. Please be careful and remember what my Mom always used to say: “Its not you who is driving bad and causing the accident. Its the others. They are idiots and always expect one of them to come around the next corner. Be prepared.”. So? Still not wearing your seatbelt after you have seen this?

There is a little after work event on Wednesday I would like to invite you to. Come early, have some food, drinks and network. Later we'll pull the tables away and open the dancefloor. We'll have an early ending at 2 AM, since we all have to work next day.The Labelfucker crew joined forces with Zak and Ja’bagh from Idle Conversation. First we organized a nice little after work party next Wednesday at Propaganda. Its friends and family, as usual. Come early, enjoy a drink at the bar or have some food. Meet new and old friends, talk and network. At 11 PM we’ll move the tables and start the party. We have invited some of Moscows best DJs to feed your senses. Besides we’ll have a vj and we’ll show vidoes on the screen. It will be an early end around 2 AM, because we all have to work next day. Come join us, bring a friend or two. We expect a lot of people. Please send me an email and I’ll put you on our list. That will make sure you can pass Ja’baghs tight style- and facecontrol.

So is that the end of Labelfucker? You just moved into some old unfancy club? Nope. This is WOW! a new project between the Idle Conversation guys and us. We’ll continue to make our underground trash parties. Next one is in the planning already. Expect a Lopht Party Brooklyn Style at the end of November. This is a new, much bigger location. Away from residentials, so we can party without policemen.

DJ Baku

We'll have the chance to see one of the most famous hip hop acts from Japan. These guys live hip hop and drum n bass more than the Gangstas of Brooklyn or Londons Brighton. Go check it out.

Being a former New Yorker I have a lot of Japanese friends. These guys run the coolest design stores in SoHo and one of my friends is a killer Drum & Bass DJ, a friend of Makoto and now a famous Tokyo club promoter. Takeya used to rock our NYC parties. I always wanted to go see Tokyo, but never made it so far. I guess its just too far away from my regular travelling routes to Europe and the US. Damn, probably I should take a vacation and the time to see and experience it. Especially the Tokyo club scene.

For all of you who feel like me, but are stuck in Moscow (with this terrible weather), there is a chance to see one of Japans most famous Hip Hop acts next Thursday (Oct. 25th) at Solyanka and Friday (Oct. 26th) at Simachevs. Of course DJ Baku wouldn’t call himself like that, since the Japanese are world champions in understatement. What a contrast to Moscow. Alone for that reason I will go see the guy :-)

Well, I am not a promoter and I am not just copying a press release (as other sites), stating what kind of things Baku has done and achieved in the past years. If you are into Hip Hop and Drum n Bass, go see DJ Baku. Take my word for it, its going to be good.

Dates:

Thursday Oct. 25th @ Solyanka

DJ Baku Live Show within the regular Flammable Beats night

300 Rub Cover

Ul. Solyanka 11

Metro: Kitai Gorod

www.s-11.ru

Friday Oct 26th @ Simachevs Bar

DJ Baku Dj Set in the bar Denis Simachev (Stoleshnikov per, 12/2). Face Control

www.denissimachev.com

Metro: Teatralnaya or Tverskaya

I think you can also listen to it Friday Oct 26th on Next FM 105,2 … but nothing is as good as the real deal. This event is brought to you by the Flammable Beats guys and Fujibeats. While I am at it. Check DJ Sestra’s Live Set this Friday after 10 PM on Next FM 105,2 (straight out of Simachevs) … or go see the Low Budget Family live at Simachevs.

Almost got killed

It can go that fast. You walk on Sadove and then some piece of wall hits you. Well, it didn't, that's why I am still able to write this article. But it was a close call and in the future I will make a little more distance between buildings with scaffolds and me.

Yes, Winter has arrived in Moscow. A bit early this year, but I am actually grateful. One reason is that I really don’t like this rainy wet weather and I prefer the snow and cold. Another is, that I am still alive and able to see this year’s first snow. Sounds a bit dramatic you say, but I have my reasons to say what I say. No, I didn’t piss off some Mafia Boss or Oligarch (again). And nope, I didn’t almost die on alcohol poisoning or some other effect, after another night of heavy drinking and way too much Vodka at one of my favorite clubs. It was as simple as walking down the street and being hit by some falling wall from a building last night.

Yes right, just like that. Imagine how fast it can go. I have met some friends to discuss our upcoming Halloween party (Oct 27th) and I was supposed to meet another friend Zak right after. Zak has run behind schedule, so I decided to walk a little, just to get a free head, use the extra time for some thinking and feel the cold wind in my face. The wind was promising snow and I just love this kind of wind. After all I am from Bavaria. So I cross Maykovskaya, walk down Sadove. I have to make it to Pokrovka at one point and when its time I will just get a taxi. Not far from Mayakovskaya I cross the street where the famous strip club 911 used to be. I am thinking about the people who died there not so long ago, when the club started to catch fire. What a terrible death.

Its loud in that area. Sadove is loud in general. I remember the last few nights at a temp flat on Prospect Mira, where I stayed in August. It was loud there as well and I wonder how people can live so close to these streets. Its then, when a woman tumbles towards me with a bleeding head. Her son running near her, pulling on her coat, trying to stop her. She seems to want to get moving. Then there is a body guard or some sort of big guy running after her and trying to stop her as well. She seems to need medical attention, but she is in shock and seems to like to just run away from the scene. She is Asian. The blood is running from her head. I am still trying to understand what happened when I pass them and only now I see some large piece of wall laying on the sidewalk and some more pieces on the garden ring street.

The building nearby has a scaffold and it seems its being renovated. This piece of wall is huge. Its after 9 PM on Saturday night. Raining and a little windy. Nobody is working on the building that night. Probably the wind loosened some old structure and it fell. It must have just happened. The woman was lucky. I was lucky. We could have been hit by the wall. I am checking the woman, but the guard is helping her. Probably they are waiting for the ambulance. I am taking a few steps away from the scene. Who know if not more comes down from above. When I look up to check where it came from I am seeing a guy on top, trying to find out what happened and to secure whatever is left. I take a last look and move on. Nobody needs me here and I have my meeting with Zak. I walk a little more, before I take a gipsy taxi. The wind is cold tonight. Raindrops are falling on my head. It smells like snow Bavarian people in the mountains used to say. Yes, its wonderful. I like it. Its fresh. Its like a cleaning of the head. Its good to be alive.
Chemical Brothers Tonight at B1 Club

I went to see the Chemical Brothers Live last night. They are playing again tonight. Check out what I have to say about it before you spend $100 for the ticket...

It was 1996 when I bought my first Chemical Brothers album. A year later a leaving Europe. I’m sitting in the tourist class of some Delta Airlines jet flying to NYC. “Dig your own whole” is looping on my CD-Player during that flight and just a few days later, I am listening to the album in my new employer “Thing.net’s” large 26th street loft, after people have gone home.

During my NYC stay I met some guys from Astralwerks, the record label of Big Beat artists like the Chemical Brothers and many others. The label had a loft with a recording studio just next to a friends office on Broadway (& Houston). Astralwerks frequently invited people for some parties and listening sessions into their studio and I used to go in and out there. Today Astralwerks has artists like Hamburg based “Digitalismn” or NYC locals DFA in its portfolio.

I have been in Berlin last weekend. Partying, when I received a message from my friend Donald in Moscow: “Hey, you want to go see the Chemical Brothers next week? I can put us on the list”. Great. I wanted to see them anyway, but expected the typical Moscow premium price and seriously considered going. Now it was no question.

We arrived early last night. Its always risky business with the guest lists and we wanted to have some extra time which was good, because there was no guest list. Donald called the tour manager and found out that the club (B1) doesn’t allow a guest list and the band is arguing with the club (at the time being). He was confident it would be sorted out and it was. About 20 min later a girl came asking us if we are waiting for the guest list. Nevertheless there were many more people on the list than tickets available. We were lucky we were early.

So, would you pay $100 for this show? Yes, you heard right. 2200 Rub. if you bought it upfront or 2500 on the show. Well, the Chemical Brothers“>Chemical Brothers are known for having a spectacular show, but is it really worth $100? Thank god, I didn’t have to make that decision. Nevertheless there were many more people than I expected to see with a premium ticket price like this. Besides the usual creative crowd you could see business men in suits (with their bunnies) and lots of known artists from TV and film. We saw Tschulpan Chamatowa from Good Bye Lenin and many others from TV, DJing, Music and so on. Well, of course… who else could spend that amount of money for a 2 hour show.

The show was good. To be honest I am not sure it was worth $100 for me. I liked the light show and the video projections. As usual the Chemical Brothers work with some of the best artist in that area. The Chemical Brothers themselves are hiding behind a giant table with synths and samplers. Only once in a while they come out front and show themselves. Most of the time, they seem to be hiding inside of the shadow of their large projections. Well, I guess its the music it is all about. Speaking of which. Its always hard for electronic artists to make a live gig in that scale. What should you play? Turning some knops and hitting the sampler? Artists like Massive Attack get a live band, which is learning to play live instruments with their electronic music. Others like Miss Kitten or Etienne De Crecy just spin their favorite records, as they’d do it in a normal club setup. The Chemical Brothers are hiding, but they provide you with a large video screen and giant video projections along with lasers and other light effects.

B1 is known for its bad sound system and setup. I have witnessed that personally with De La Soul and Etienne de Crecy and there is proof of others which think the same way (including some local DJ friends of mine). This fact is always surprising me, since B1 is around for a while now and its known to be the only real live club/location in Moscow. One should think they would get it right at one point. Well, they did last night. The sound was not balanced well, but at least we didn’t have the usual outages and feedbacks. Then again, nobody was singing this time. I am even wondering, if the Chemical Brothers didn’t bring their own equipment. While we are bashing B1 I have a few more comments. The club’s staff is generally unfriendly. Hey, you pay a premium price (OK not me) and then you get treated like a little kid in times. There is lots of improvements to be made on this one. I also got cheated at the bar. I ordered a drink that should have cost 450 Rub. Gave the bartender a 1000 and he gave me 400 change back. When I realized it and wanted to complain, he looked at me, grinned and moved away with a “Sorry I’m busy”. Don’t take any of the cocktails. They are expensive and weak. Man, I paid 500 (yes, five hundred) Rubels for a Long Island Ice tea. I knew the price, because I checked the menu, but for that price I would have expected the usual 0.5l or more. Instead I got a 0.3 glass with mostly Cola.

So, would you spend $100 to see the Chemical Brothers Live? There is another gig at B1 tonight. Hope the Brothers gonna work it out.

Rooftop Party 2007

Check out this party. I have been DJing there last weekend. It was probably the best party this summer, if not this year. It will be hard to top it. If you plan on topping it, please invite me :-) otherwise make sure, you'll be there next year for the rooftop party 2008.

About 3 years ago I have been invited to a rooftop BBQ. What was supposed to be a BBQ, turned out to be a real good allnight party. 3 years later we were celebrating another (the 3rd) rooftop party. Petrus, the weather saint (as we say in Germany) had mercy. It was raining all day long but when the party started he had sent us the last cleaning shower and finalized it with a beautiful long lasting rainbow. What a way to start a roof top party. With the sunset more and more people came on the roof. Nobody counted, but 150 people were estimated to come and I’d say that number was far exceeded. People at Krisha and Dyagilev must have wondered where their regular expat guests have been that night. Yes right. We were on our own Krisha.

This party had everything to offer. From a chat between friends to a fierce fight to a wedding proposal and a girlfriend in tears. Just like life. Oh, I forgot the various fireworks around us and the lightened balloons. It must have been 50 or so, passing far over us around midnight. At first, I thought Moscow about space invaders a la Indepence day (movie), but that was probably the result of the various joints, I was offered that night. Nikl and I “two-zero” were spinning the music. Oh well, we were spinning the mouse wheels of our notebooks and “Traktor” for many long hours, but we got rewarded with a dancing cowd and some girls even showed us their … (smiling faces I mean, he he). I remember the moment Nikl asked me, if he should play “You gotta fight the right to party”. At first I thought it may be a little too harsh for this crowd. He played it anyway (we battled that night, meaning he played a tune and I answered with another and so on). It was a blast! Just imagine 50 to 100 people yelling “You gotta fight your right to party!”. It can’t get any better than this.

Being behind the notebook most of the night, I can’t tell you anymore tales about this party. I think it was sad to see people getting way too drunk towards the end of the night and losing control, but that is human. Its Vodka (dangerous stuff!) and the Moscow vibe. On the other hand it was good to see the happiness. Some people went home together. Some met new friends. Some became boyfriend and girlfriend that night. I made peace with someone and as I said before one girl (Katja) even told me that she received a serious marriage proposal on that very roof. I guess, they all will never forget that special Moscow summer night in July 2007.

Early in the morning, at dawn the trouble makers were long sleeping. The remaining few of us were sitting on the highest point of “our” roof and enjoying a last drink with friends. The organizers Martin, Philipp and Andreas finally found some time to rest. They were working hard to organize this party for weeks ahead, especially setting up all that stuff the days before took time, money and a lot of energy. A roof full of trash was left, after everybody went home. Empty bottles, the typical half full glasses, some food and all sorts of other stuff laying around. But the cleaning up work can wait. Now it is time to just sit, enjoy the fire, a drink and watch the sunrise. Then feel the warm rays of the sun on your skin while smoking another cigar and have a glass of fine gin (not me, I don’t drink these days).

It’s another summer day in Moscow. Yesterday is gone and it’s a pity, because we enjoyed the best party Moscow can offer. Yes, you heard right. This is probably the best Moscow event of the year. That just leaves us to wait (and hope) for July 2008. Martin, one of the organizers and the provider of the roof is leaving Moscow and so we can just hope that the others will find a new roof to invite us for another “Rooftop Party 2008”. Andreas is full of optimism, so let’s wait and see. Thank you for this great party anyway! We, and I think I can talk for all of us, really appreciate all the efforts and money you have spent to make this happen. Once again, let me say, that you can be proud of yourselves, you created Moscow’s coolest and best party. NYC Brooklyn style :-) … and even there, they can’t top this.

Metallica Live - Back in Russia after 16 years

I'm not a big Heavy Metal fan, but this band is legendary and I wouldn't miss to see them play infront of 60 000 fans. See how it was last night. Backstage with Metallica (text, photos and videos)...

We are waiting for friends infront of the Lushniki stadium in Moscow. The people around us are pretty scary and everything else than normal average Russians. Heavy Metal fans from all over Russia came to see the legends of Metallica today. It has been a while since Metallica have last been in Russia. 1991 to be precise. Rumor is that something has happened on their last gig. Another rumor is that James Hetfield had some bad “hunting experience” in Siberia a few years later. None of it is true, says Robert Trujillo, their bass player. It’s all rumors. The question, why they didn’t come for such a long time still remains unanswered, though. But, the 60 000 fans are happy and forgive their idols. In return the band is grateful they all showed up. Metallica know very well, that they are nothing without their fans and that Russia has a big following. It’s one of the largest gigs we have played on this tour, they say. It’s also the final gig of this tour. After the show they’ll head back home. Exhausted from weeks of touring and many gigs like this. But there is no long rest. After a few days they’ll be back in the studio, working on their upcoming new album again.

The original name of the tour was “Sick of the studio tour 2007”, but the members of Metallica called it the family tour. They all had family members with them. Wives, children and others came along, were sightseeing in Moscow. That was also the mood in the dressing room and backstage. Calm, friendly, family like. No signs of groupies, drugs, alcohol or whatever you’d expect from a heavy metal band with their status. Instead of vodka and beers they had Red Bulls and Gatorades in the fridge. After all, most of the members are in the 40’s, which doesn’t mean they are lame, instead they are energetic and rock on stage. Metallica played a none-stop 2 ½ hour gig, kicking like they were 18 years old. Respect. I guess besides their families, Don is one of their energy sources. Don, Kirks cousin and the bands chiropractor, travels with Metallica since more than 25 years. He has seen over 200 hundred shows and he cares at them as they are his children. He makes sure, they eat the right food. They drink enough and he gives them acupuncture treatments and other therapies to keep the band fit for their gigs.

The crowd thanked Metallica in a loud roaring sound for each song. It’s amazing how much noise 60.000 people can make. It’s also amazing to be on stage and see an ocean of lighters when the band plays one of their ballads. I am not a big Heavy Metal fan and I have been on many shows in the past, but this time I have been impressed a lot. I have been impressed by the band, their very professional and always (very) friendly team. And I have been impressed by their fans, which looked mean, dark and angry outside the stadium, but once inside turned into an ocean of light and waving hands, being grateful and happy that their idols returned after such a long time and gave them this very long concert. In return Metallica played 3 long add-on sessions, before they finished up. They bowed respectfully to their crowd, promised to come back sooner next time (not in 16 years again), said Thank you and Spasibo for a (very long) last time and then rushed into their van to drive to the airport, where their jet was waiting. We gonna make a “runner”, Robert said to me just a few minutes before they left. Sorry I can’t stay longer and hang out. I would have loved to see more of Moscow. Well, come back then and come back soon. Your fans will be grateful.
